Familiar with the Word of God
I have discovered that the more familiar with the Word of God we become, the more vulnerable we are to being tone deaf. Oh, we know the Scriptures, we have our theology down pat, and we know where to find Bible stories, and we can even give references for major points of doctrine. We know the Word but are we hearing its tone? In thinking about this I was reminded of the incident in Scripture which tone played an important role in (John 12:28-30) which says, "Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, an angel spake to him." Jesus answered and said, this voice came not because of Me, but for your sakes."
You see, everyone heard a sound but not everyone discerned the voice within the sound. O how those who are living close with the Lord can discern His voice when He speaks. Within this group of people on the same spot at the same time hearing the same voice, some thought it was just thunder, while others thought it spoke angelically. So too, whenever a sermon is preached or a lesson taught, some will hear it as thunder while others will hear it as a message from Heaven. It all depends upon what's happening in the heart. So how is your hearing?
