The Beauty of Old Men
The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.
Proverbs 20:29
I never imagined myself going through a “mid-life crisis.” You know, the cliché of driving a sports car with the wind blowing through what little hair you have left. But here I am, smack in the middle of life—watching my dad, once my superhero, now aging, growing frail and fragile. In the middle of seeing my own children become adults, starting families, and forging their own paths. I find myself navigating the whirlwind of changes that life brings at this stage.
As I watch my own hair turn gray, and turn loose, I can't help but reflect on the years gone by—the days when I felt strong and invincible. I remember the times when I’d take a hard hit playing football and shake it off without a second thought. Now, I can throw my back out simply brushing my teeth! Back then, I thought I knew it all. Youth seemed endless, and I never considered how quickly time would slip away.
But as we all know, youth fades, and age comes rushing toward us faster than we realize.
In this "middle" stage of life, where we look back with nostalgia and look forward with uncertainty, we face a unique set of challenges. We’re trying to balance raising families, working hard, maintaining homes, while watching our parents grow older and pass on. Older generations fade, while new ones emerge. Seasons change, and we see it all unfold right before our eyes.
In this middle ground, it's vital to remember to cherish each season of life. As the vigor of youth slips away, and the wisdom of experience settles in, let’s not forget how fleeting this life is. Here today, gone tomorrow. This journey is precious, and we must slow down to savor it. Let’s use the wisdom we've gained to help guide and support the younger generation, as they step into their own seasons of life.
Time is a gift, and it moves quickly. Take time to laugh with your family, be less judgmental, and more loving. Live life fully, and enjoy each moment, because as time marches on, it’s the little moments that make the journey worthwhile.
